Understanding and Respect: Navigating the Sensitivities Between Taiwan and China

The historical and political relationship between Taiwan and China is complex and deeply rooted in decades of tension and differing perspectives. Taiwan views itself as an independent nation with its own government and democratic system, while China considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory, subject to eventual reunification. These conflicting views have created a sensitive and often contentious environment, not just politically, but also culturally and socially.

As a BL creator and filmmaker, I have the incredible privilege of reaching audiences all over the world, including regions as diverse as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan. My work transcends borders and cultural differences, uniting fans through a shared love of storytelling. However, this wide reach also brings its own set of challenges, especially when expressing gratitude to my fans from different regions.

On numerous occasions, after finishing an episode of a series, I’ve expressed my thanks to both my Chinese and Taiwanese fans. This simple act of gratitude has often sparked intense reactions. Chinese fans have questioned why I acknowledge Taiwan separately, insisting that it is merely a city within China. Conversely, Taiwanese fans have voiced their frustration when not explicitly recognized as a distinct entity, asserting their identity as a separate nation.

These reactions have left me feeling confused and frustrated. I often think, "Why don’t you sit down and negotiate this out? Once you reach a conclusion, let me know because I am caught in the middle." This sensitivity affects not only individual interactions but also the global perception of both regions.

The broader implications are significant. Cultural and political sensitivities can impact international relationships and cultural exchanges, creating barriers where there should be bridges. It’s crucial to remember that no one can be expected to understand another's culture completely. If someone makes a mistake or says something incorrectly, the best response is to educate them kindly, not react with anger or threats of boycotts. We must all grow up and handle these situations with maturity, rather than like five-year-olds.

I suggest to my fans that you urge your governments or those in power to sit down and negotiate. Resolve this issue and let the world know the outcome. This article is not about being upset or annoyed with my fans; far from it. I love my fans deeply and am incredibly grateful for your support. You don’t have to thank me—I'm the one who should be thanking you because your support means the world to me.

Your passion for my work is what drives me, and I appreciate every single one of you. These sensitivities and confusions arise from a lack of clear information. So, let's strive for clarity and understanding. Once a resolution is reached, we can move forward together, fostering a world of respect and peace.

In the end, let’s work towards mutual respect and open dialogue, appreciating the diverse perspectives that each of us brings to the table. Only then can we hope to achieve true understanding and global harmony.
